What kind of background do I need in order to go into the program? What computer classes at North City should I take to be ready for the program?
It is strongly recommended that you be computer literate on Macintosh computers and have an intermediate level of skill in Adobe Photoshop prior to beginning the Print Module (the program entry module). Critical thinking, problem-solving skills, good written communication skills, a team-player attitude, and self-motivation are also very strongly recommended. A design or art background is very helpful.
Our former students tell us that familiarity with the software used in the program will greatly enhance your learning experience, your portfolio, and your employability. The following preparatory short-term software classes at North City are available:
To practice on the software you already know, use the Mac "Computer Lab", which is available every Saturday between 8:00 AM and 1:00 PM.
Will the attendance hours for the short-term software classes count toward the hours and requirements of the certificate program?
No. The short-term classes prepare you for the program; they do not substitute for it
How soon can I start the program? Can I just walk in or phone to discuss how soon I can start the program?
This certificate program is offered once per year in the day and approximately once per year in the evening. We compare program options with your availability and preparation for the program and discuss these with you at the IMCP Information Session. (Phone 619-388-1800 to sign up).
Because of the number of factors involved, we respond to this question only at an IMCP Information Session. We schedule one, or more, Information Sessions each month and recommend you attend an Information Session within six months prior to starting the program.
What information is covered during the Interactive Media Information Session?
During the Information Session you will:
After I attend an Interactive Media Information Session, can I immediately start the certificate program?
No. There is another step involved. After you have submitted an application to the program at the Information Session, you need to register for the program. You'll learn more about this at the Information Session. Only those who pre-register for the program are admitted to class on the first day of the program. Placement in the certificate program is on a first-come, first-served basis.
How much outside classroom time is expected from this program? Will I be able to work full-time and still be able to complete the program?
Successful completers of this program spent an average of 5 hours per week outside of class on projects. The amount of outside classroom time necessary to complete this program varies depending on your own personal working style. Some topics feel more "natural" (and require less time to learn) and some will require more practice time before you are comfortable with them.
Students in the evening program have worked full time and been able to complete the program. Students in the day program could work 20 to 30 hours per week and complete this program.
Can I vary my attendance among the afternoon, and evening program?
No. You need to commit to attending the certificate program at one time of day. If you are having trouble with attendance, talk to the instructor.
If for some reason I am forced to drop out of the program in mid-semester, can I continue where I left off the following semester?
No. If you find that you need to drop out of the program, you should first talk to the instructor, who may recommend you schedule an appointment with the program counselor. If the problem cannot be resolved and you definitely have to drop out, be aware that you have to re-start the module from the beginning. You cannot continue where you left off.
Is job placement available through North City upon completion of the IMCP?
No. Students are strongly encouraged to research viable career options prior to, during, and upon completion of this program. The counselor will begin to address this during the Information Session. Graduates are encouraged to use one of San Diego County's Career Centers for assistance with job search.
How will the Interactive Media program help me with my job search?
At the completion of the full 875-hour program, students will have a portfolio for use during their job search.
In addition, students who have attended a minimum of 90 percent of the hours of the program, met the timelines for submission of the course projects, and produced satisfactory work will earn a Certificate of Program Completion.
Can I attend the class if I do not want a certificate? Can I take only one module?
This may be possible. First you need to attend an IMCP Information Session.
What kind of jobs can I expect to get with this training and what is the salary and job outlook for this field?
The Interactive Media Certificate Program prepares you for an entry-level job in the print, multimedia, or web design field. Employment opportunities for our graduates vary based on their artistic ability and proficiency. They have become freelancers, entrepreneurs, or employed with much stronger skills in jobs with responsibility ranging from entry level production work to project management.
The salary for entry-level positions is between $10-12 per hour. Employers look most favorably on those who have been working during their training program. The nature of this explosive industry makes it impossible to predict future job trends. The instructors bring in guest speakers to avail students of the most recent labor market trends in the industry.
Your ability to earn after you complete the program largely depends on how much knowledge and skill you have before you begin the program, your natural abilities, persistence and dedication. A design or art background is essential for employment in this field. For further information, check local job postings and employment web sites.
Is financial aid available for this program?
This is a no-fee program. Financial aid for books and supplies is available to those who meet the educational and other requirements. During the Information Session you will receive information about financial aid.
If you have a prior student loan, a student loan deferment may be possible.
This program is approved for students accessing their Veteran's Benefits.
Will taking the full 875-hour Interactive Media Certificate Program qualify me for EDD unemployment benefits (CTB)?
Individuals who will be seeking approval of this certificate program for retraining benefits need to start the program with the Print module, which is offered once per year in the day and approximately once per year in the evening. (Note: EDD typically requires a minimum of 20 hours per week in the classroom. The day certificate program is 25 hours per week and the evening certificate program is 15 hours per week). You must have applied for California Training Benefits by the 16th week of your unemployment benefits. Please contact your EDD representative for further details in your specific case.
