Interactive Media Certificate Program (IMCP)

Learn the software needed to produce creative media projects in this 875-hour training program that covers artistic and technical skills in web design, animation, image editing, print production, digital video and more.

Where: San Diego Continuing Education, North City campus, 8401 Aero Drive, San Diego 92123. (Entry to classrooms is in the back of the building).

When: The Interactive Media Certificate Program is offered once per year in the Afternoon (12:30 to 5:30 PM, running from September through June) and approximately once per year in the Evening (5:30 to 10:30 PM, with the current program running January, 2008, through May, 2009).

What: The program includes three modules.

  • Print Module covers Mac Basics, Digital Graphics, Vector Graphics, Desktop Publishing, and Portable Document Forms.
  • Multimedia Module covers Sound Editing, Virtual Reality, 3D Modeling, Interactive Video Authoring and Enhancement, Motion Graphics, and Vector Based Animation.
  • Web Design Module covers HTML Fundamentals, Web Development, and Vector Based Animation.

Each module also includes a section on portfolio development. At the end of the program, you will have a portfolio to show to potential clients and employers.

Technical: This class is taught in a Macintosh lab. Each workstation is equipped with up-to-date, industry-standard software from Adobe, Apple, Macromedia and others.

How to Apply:

  • The first step is to attend an "IMCP Information Session." Sign up by phoning 619-388-1800.
  • Read FAQ #4 for what is covered during the IMCP Information Session. It is recommended you attend the session within six months prior to starting the program.
  • This training is FREE to adult residents of California. No catch. These are your tax dollars at work. Materials will cost you approximately $200.

Learn: Use of industry-standard software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat Pro, InDesign, Final Cut Pro, After Effects, Flash, Dreamweaver and more. Use the software to:

  • Make photo corrections
  • Develop a website in Flash
  • Create a stationery package
  • Script and film your own movies
  • Create a DVD that can play on any player
  • Create a portfolio through project-based learning

Complete IMCP Course Outline

To be successful in this program, we strongly recommend you have:

  • Basic computer literacy skills on a Macintosh, including file management.
  • Intermediate level skills in Photoshop.
  • Some experience and/or strong interest in fine art and/or design.
  • Critical thinking, problem solving and good written communication skills.
  • Willingness to be a team player and ability to be effective in group-project environments.

You can update your computer skills in Mac Basics, File Management, and Photoshop CS through North City's short-term software classes. Familiarity with the software packages used in the Interactive Media Certificate Program will greatly enhance your classroom experience, your portfolio, and your employability.
