Automotive Upholstery

The Automotive Upholstery certificate program at ECC is a self-paced, 600-hour training program that can be completed in 6 to 8 months. Students also have the option to learn Furniture and/or Marine Upholstery. The Automotive Upholstery program teaches students how to:

  • Follow safety requirements in upholstery
  • Use and maintain upholstery hand and power tools, including computerized sewing machines
  • Identify various upholstery materials and designs
  • Layout, fabricate and install seat upholstery, carpets, headliners, convertible tops, door panels, arm rests, pleating and button tufting
  • Sew beading, curves, square corners and zipper inserts
  • Develop better communication, customer service and business skills

Graduates receive a 600-hour Certificate of Program Completion.

How much do Automotive Upholsterers earn?

The program prepares students for entry-level work as an Upholsterer Helper, which pays starting wages of $6.50 to $9 per hour. The median wage for entry-level Upholsterers is $366 per week, while knowledgeable, experienced upholsterers can make as much as $660 per week.

In high-end trim shops, journeymen who have specialty skills in sun roofs, convertible tops and simulated convertible tops can make up to $20 per hour.
