Topics covered in class will include discussion of the labor and delivery process, obstetrical and newborn hospital procedures including discussion of anesthesia options as well as cesarean delivery. Characteristics of newborns, infant safety and family postpartum care are also discussed. Students will learn relaxation and breathing techniques for birth as well as labor comfort strategies and partner support techniques. For those delivering at Balboa Naval Hospital, the last night of class will include a hospital tour. The class, however, covers the hospital procedures and anesthesia options used in all San Diego County hospitals. Parents delivering at other hospitals are encouraged to arrange for a facility tour at their respective location.

A partner can help you with some of the breathing and labor strategies practiced in class, but it is NOT REQUIRED for attendance in class. Feel free to bring family and friends with you as your partner, or come alone. No children under 16 years of age allowed. Expectant mothers and their support people may join the class at ANY time throughout the series, and take any amount of classes that fits their schedule.
