Continuing Education Welding Students are Top Guns!

San Diego Continuing Education students Anthony Lam and Thomas Kuge completed three cost savings projects for the Auto Body Program’s new facilities at the expanded Skills Center. Both are structural steel students in the Welding Program at the Educational Cultural Complex.

The team updated five welding tables, four new gas stations (to like new condition), and refurbished a gas manifold system. These projects included input from Continuing Education’s Auto Body team to help them make the transition into their new facility and instructional space. The welding and gas stations meet the needs of the Auto Body program, and are customized to the processes currently used.

Tony and Tom were provided verbal “fit, form and function” instructions, and teamed up to develop detail instructions for the refurbishing project. They were also were given a working schedule with a dead line they met–as the industry likes to say “on time and under budget”!

Professional Development and FLEX Updates at Continuing Education

Since September 2, 2009:

· 2500+ flex hours have been reported as complete

· 150+ Flex Workshops have been posted

· 40+ Independent Projects have been submitted

During 2008-2009:

· 250+ Flex Workshops were offered on the Flex Workshop online schedule.

· 5773 hours of professional development hours were reported in the Flex Workshop online system.

· 114 Independent Projects were completed, with 600+ hours of professional development reported.

Professional Development at Continuing Education

Fall Flex Days 2009 were a great success, with high attendance reported at all events. More than 400 faculty, administrators and staff attended Convocation Day, as President Beebe welcomed us all back to the new academic year. Speakers included Chancellor Constance Carroll, along with Rich Grosch, Esther Matthew, Rita Avila and Jim Mahler. VP Brian Ellison and Accreditation Team Leaders Ray Ramirez and Marne Foster brought everyone up to speed on the progress we have made and the tasks that lay ahead.

The afternoon was spent working on Accreditation tasks, as faculty participated in program-based Focus Groups, and an Evening Recap was offered.

On 9/3 the first annual ‘Adjunct Breakfast with the President’ was held, with 130+ faculty attending this informative event. A concurrent session offered by District Research Staff presented the results of the Student Satisfaction Survey, and on Sept. 4 the results from the Staff Satisfaction Survey were presented. Program meetings were also held on the morning of Sept. 3.

CE faculty also provided a series of well-attended workshops, including:

Continuing Education Students Succeed in Basic Skills

On Thursday, November 5, six mid-level Adult Basic Education students were promoted to the High School/GED class at Continuing Education’s Mid-City Campus. Congratulations to this group of committed students!

Continuing Education Emeritus Program is “Breaking a Leg”

Seven Continuing Education students have been performing in the North Park Playwrights Festival this month. Five are acting, one is playwriting and one is directing. Plus one student is playing a featured role in City College’s Bye Bye Birdie.

The students are taking Continuing Education Instructor Holly Ritter’s Nuts and Bolts of Theatre Acting Class as part of the Emeritus Program. The class will host special guest appearances by San Diego Theatre Professionals; former UCSD instructor Mary Corrigan, Ph.D., who is an internationally known voice-diction professional; and Angela Rasbeary, a Casting Director and Outreach Coordinator for the Nationally Acclaimed Equity Regional San Diego Rep theatre.

Continuing Education Parent Ed Program Hosts Regional Conference

The Continuing Education Parent Education program hosted the San Diego Association for the Education of Young Children’s Fall Conference at West City Campus on October 17.

More than 160 participants from community colleges throughout the region attended the intergenerational conference, and had an opportunity to visit CE’s newest campus.

Attendees commented on the wonderful facility, the sustainability features and the green landscaping at West City. Toursincluded the new intergenerational center, including the parenting room; the multi-purpose room for the Emeritus Program.

CE and City faculty presented workshops on parent education and early childhood education topics. CE Dean Shimazaki led tours of the campus.

Continuing Education Instructor Marne Foster Awarded for Excellent Outcomes Assessment!

Continuing Education Instructor Marne Foster received the Promising Outcomes Work and Exemplary Research (P.O.W.E.R.) Award for “The best example of excellent outcomes assessment in the noncredit area”.

Marne was honored because under her leadership, CE moved from institutional SLOs, to program and course level SLOs in less than one year–something that typically takes 2-3 years to accomplish!

Marne received the award in San Francisco as a part of the 2009 Strengthening Student Success Conference, and credits San Diego Continuing Education faculty and staff for their hard work and dedication to Student Learning Outcomes.

Chuong Nguyen succeeds through education

Continuing Education student Chuong Nguyen begins in ESL classes at North City Campus, transfers to Mesa College and earns an AA degree in General Education. Nguyen is now enrolled in the radiology program at Mesa and has received recongition and scholarships to support his effort. Visit this link to read his success story!

100 years young and still doing music!

Continuing Education instructor, and Conductor of the San Diego Mandolin Orchestra, Jim Trepasso will honor student Gene Vacher on October 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the Recital Hall in Balboa Park.

Vacher is getting close to reaching 100 years of age, and is still doing music!

Emeritus Program Shines!

Singers, accompanists, and the conductor for the Continuing Education NOTEables choir volunteered recently in a performance that benefited the work of the NeuroSciences Institute. This was the group’s first experience for this kind of event.
